We are very busy learning all about numbers to 100 in Primary 2. We are learning to count to 100, identify numbers before, after and in between AND we are practising counting in tens and units.
Here are some games we have been using to help us grow in confidence in these areas.

Primary 2 are scientists!!!
Primary 2 have begun a joint project with Primary 6 in which we are participating in a national British survey. It is a survey by the British Science Association and Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to gather data and investigate the diversity of bumblebees in the UK. They asked schools to join in and help test the hypothesis that the diversity of bumblebees is affected by their immediate surroundings and the wider landscape.
The children have already begun going out to our newly potted lavender plant with P6 pupils (and Mrs. Robson) to observe the movements of the bees. P6 have been helping us collect the data and upload it online.
If you would like to partake in the survey with your child you can request an observation worksheet from Mrs. Baxter. Each observation requires a minimum of 5 minutes and we welcome you to complete these observations before school begins or just after school has ended. Completed observation sheets can be returned to Mrs. Baxter and we will help her upload the information.
Please help support our experiment.

Time
We have spent the past few weeks learning about time. We have been learning about analogue and digital clocks. We have been learning to tell the time at o' clock and half past. Learning half past the hour was a little tricky because the hour hand points in between two different numbers.
This is the link to a game we have been playing in class to help us identify times on digital and analogue clocks.

Katie Morag
Since Christmas our topic has been about Katie Morag, a little girl who lives on a fictional island near Scotland. We have learned about how to get to the Scottish islands, what kind of buildings they have and what kind of wildlife they have.
"I learned that the Isle of Struay is really the Island of Coll." - Hana
"I learned that there are lots of farm animals on the Isle of Coll"- Loukas
"I didn't know that there are bottlenose dolphins near the Scottish islands" -Anita
We worked in groups of four or five to make a short film to share some information about Katie Morag and life on a Scottish island, although our writing was beautiful it hasn't come out very clearly on the videos. We hope you enjoy watching our Katie Morag videos anyway.
Please watch them and leave us some comments.

P2 Toy Museum!
What a fantastic day! We had so much fun showing our mums and dads some of the things we have been learning about in our Toys topic. Our Jack in the Boxes were a great hit, and well done to all the mums and dads who joined in our hobby horse races. We had great fun making them but even more fun racing with them. All the boys and girls were great tour guides, explaining all the different activities and things we had learnt about. Thank you to all the parents who came to visit our class and well done to all the boys and girls for all their hard work.

Happy Halloween!!
Happy Halloween from Primary 2!! We were so excited because it was Halloween today. We thought it was very funny that Mrs. Baxter , Mrs. Robson and Ms. McKenzie all dressed up like witches. We wrote Halloween stories about a silly ghost in the morning and in the afternoon we had lots of Halloween activities. We made spiders using hand prints and paint, we coloured some spooky pictures and we played puzzles on the smart board. What a fun day!!!

Numbers to 100!
We have been working really hard learning our numbers to 100. We have been learning what the numbers are and look like and how to identify the number before, the number after and the number between two other numbers i.e. What is the number between 80 and 82? Answer: 81. This can sometimes be tricky though, so we are trying to use tools to help us such hundred squares, and the class number line on our wall.
This is a link to a game to help us practise recognising numbers to 100 and identifying their correct place on a hundred square.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime/games/mend.shtml
We are also working hard on finding 10 more than. This is a link to a game we play at school on the Smart board. The game times us while we identify 10 more than as quickly as we can. We like trying to beat our time. The best time in the class was 2 seconds!!!!

Digraph fun!!
We have been practising lots of the different sounds and digraphs and we have enjoyed finding new ways of practising our sounds in Primary 2. We like listening to songs about sounds and playing interactive games. Here are some links to games you might like to play too. Most of the websites mention the initial
sounds (alphabet letters) and digraphs (2 letter sounds).
(this is a link to YouTube which has the Jolly Phonics digraph
songs which will help you make the correct digraph sounds)
(choose sounds you wish to practise, this game encourages
you to identify the correct sound as it reinforces the sound throughout the
game)
(an American site which gives examples of all the initial
sounds and some of the digraph sounds in the “Learn to Read” section. It also
provides opportunities to read words and have them read back to you in the “Fun
to Read section”)
Have fun!!!
Our Gym Days!!
We are really enjoying our gym sessions in Primary 2. We have been learning how to travel, jump and how to throw and catch a ball. We do lots and lots of running around during gym and it is really important we have our gym kits. Please help remind us to bring our gym kits on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Thank you.

Primary 2 Get Creative!!
Primary 2 Personal Learning Plans!!
We are very excited to be starting our new Personal Learning Plans (P.L.Ps) in Primary 2. We have lovely new scrap books in which we can display our targets and achievements. To help us have ownership of our new P.L.Ps we have been creating front covers using different media. We have coloured our names, drawn pictures on the Ipad to stick on the cover and taken photos too. We can't wait to start adding our targets too.

Hard at work in Primary 2!
The Rainbow Fish
Today in Primary 2 we listened to the story of The Rainbow Fish and discussed how he made friends with the other fish by being kind and sharing his shiny scales with them. In our class we want to be kind like the Rainbow Fish and share what we have with others.
Here is a display of our beautiful rainbow fish with their shiny scales.
Maths
In Primary 2 today we also practised our number bonds to 10 and to 20 by playing a co-operative game in partners. We formed an inside and outside circle. Each person had a card with a number up to 20 on it. The inside circle turned round to meet their partner and showed them their number. The outside partner had to read the number. The inside person then had to ask, 'How many more do I need to make 10 or 20?' After the outside person had answered they swapped round and the outside person showed their number and asked, 'How many more...' Whilst doing this activity the children supported and praised each other. When both partners had completed their questioning the outside children moved one place to the right to meet their new partner and repeat the process again. The children really enjoyed this activity and all children were engaged and active in the task. I as the teacher could monitor the children's responses and give support where needed.

Another great day!
All the boys and girls in Primary 2 were working really well today. In Literacy we revised our sounds and practised using them to sound out and spell words.
Try this phonics game to help with your spelling.
Deep Sea Phonics
Everyone tried hard writing their weekend news and it sounded like a fun weekend for all, with trips to East Links Family Park, Five Sisters Zoo and visits to the new Sainsbury's!

In Numeracy we practised our number bonds and doubling and halving numbers. We also learned how to count in 5s. We tried to beat last week's score in our "Beat That" challenge!
Here is a link to another game we tried this week.
In the afternoon we made friendship wristbands and wrote adjectives to describe our friends. We had a hymn practice for our Mass on Wednesday to celebrate the Feast of St Cuthbert. The singing was wonderful!
Well done everyone. Remember to keep working hard!

The children could try practising writing some rainbow words at home.
We also used a phonic game on the Smartboard to practise our spelling. Here is a link to the game we used.
